As we all know the Friday following Turkey Day is "Black Friday", right? Basically a bunch of consumers who get up really early to go and spend huge amounts of money on things they probably don't even need, but because the shiny magazines and flashy adverts tell them to, they do this.
My husband participated in an experiement several years ago where he and several others walked into a local shopping mall and had to come back and let the moderator know if there was a single item that they found that the individual either needed or just could not live without - and guess what the out come was - that's right - nothing. Not a single thing!
So here is my solution for dealing with consumerism as obviously it will continue to have it's place in American society. First, ALL stores in a city should work with the local social organizations to get a Holiday Wish List - trust me - there are so many people in need - all you have to do is ask and you will find them. Second, each store who opens early and who expects a line should charge an admission fee of sorts - say $10 a ticket PER person. Each ticket number is assigned to an organization for the local community and 100% of the profits goes to the agency. The tickets are numbered and assigned on a first come first serve basis - like a concert. Then on the store's opening day you only allow a certain number of people at a time into the store. I know it's not a great solution, but at least some of the money would go towards those in need, right?
