Malaria kills millions of people every year. This is especially a huge problem in Africa, where children make up the biggest number of deaths, due to not being able to fight the disease. This is copied from the website of an organization called Nothing But Nets, who distributes pesticide/insecticide treated nets to families in need:
Despite the magnitude of the problem, there is a simple and cost-effective solution to prevent malaria deaths. For just $10, we can purchase a bed net, deliver it to a family, and explain its use. Bed nets work by creating a protective barrier against mosquitoes at night, when the vast majority of transmissions occur. A family of four can sleep under an insecticide-treated bed net, safe from malaria, for up to four years. The benefits of bed nets extend even further than the family. When enough nets are used, the insecticide used to deter mosquitoes makes entire communities safer—including even those individuals who do not have nets.
I know I, for one, felt like I gained some much-needed perspective from looking at this site...I (like many) try my hardest to avoid pesticides and any chemicals...but just think, the creation of these things has helped and has the potential to help save lives around the world. Once again I am reminded of my privileged life, where I can choose to shun chemicals for health's sake, instead of desparately needing them to save my life from a tiny mosqito. It's good to be reminded.
I love that for such a small donation such a huge difference can be made. Nets are only $10 each, something I could easily spend at lunch or going to the movies. I have donated to Nothing But Nets, and hope to do so again. I am going to follow their progress as they help protect more and more people! You can donate by going to this site: nothingbutnets.net
